Chapter eighteen
Life Changing
Adilyn
Iopen my eyes and look around me, adjusting my eyes to the dark. I must have dozed off for a moment. I look at the intricate detail on the trunk. The age of this tree shows through its height and weathered scars lining the trunk. I raise my head and survey the forest. It is quiet, except for the chirping birds, bees humming, and rustling leaves. I turn to face Stephanie. She sits next to me in silence, her hand entwined in mine. Our eyes locked, and I had many questions for her, but I didn't know where to begin. There are so many emotions crashing into me. Yet, one emotion is currently eating at my insides: fear. Fear that our friendship was fake.
"Why are you tearing up?" She asks, lifting her hand to brush the strand of hair out of my eyes.
"Did you become my friend just because of what you guys claim I am? Was our friendship ever real? Was it all just fake?" I choke out, trying to push down the sob that was about to surface.
Her eyes soften, "I had been watching you for the past few years, in the shadows, Asher, as well. I got to know you that way. It started as my duty, yes, but as time went on, I truly wanted to be your friend. Finally, meeting you in person cemented my desire to be your friend. You are remarkably kind and talented, and it's evident that you seldom reveal your true self because others rarely take the time to get to know you. Despite being overlooked numerous times, you consistently overcome adversity. Your kindness and thoughtfulness shine through; you never consider yourself superior to others. You've never complained about the hand you were given in life; instead, you've faced it head-on. From the beginning, you've shown me nothing but kindness, which is why I adore you so much," she replies. "You are genuine and never pretend to be someone you're not. You always care for others even when they don't care for you. People can be hateful to you sometimes, and you do not let that break you or retaliate. You are such a strong person, and I thank god for letting me be your friend. I'm truly blessed." She squeezes my hand, trying to hold back tears in her eyes. "Besties, remember? I don't say that lightly, either. I have never had a best friend, Alona, and I am truly honored that you are that first for me."
This time, I'm unable to suppress my sobs. I cover my face and surrender to the overwhelming emotions built inside me. Tears stream from my eyes as if the floodgates have burst open, allowing all my worries to pour out with them. I can't understand why the revelation of the truth, my truth, made me so concerned about the authenticity of our friendship. I didn't want our friendship to be insincere or circumstantial, yet here she is, consoling me and affirming our friendship was genuine.
